New Bedford – August “Gus” Fernandes, age 85 of New Bedford, passed away on Wednesday February 15, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Doris E. (Dreher) Fernandes and son of the late August and Ida (Mendoza) Fernandes
Born in New Bedford he has lived in this area all of his life. Gus was the Proprietor of Gus Fernandes Mason . He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, was a former member of Prince Henry Society, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Union #007, and American Portuguese War Veterans Post #1. Gus was happiest when he was with his family.
His family includes 8 children: Robert A. Fernandes of New Bedford, Cindy L. Santos and Susan M. Costa both of Dartmouth, Donna L. Pires of New Bedford and Carol A. Pires of Acushnet, David A. Stephenson of New Bedford, Cathy M. Curran of Fairhaven, Elaine L. Soares of Dartmouth He was also survived by 17 grandchildren and 32 great –grandchildren, sister Joanne Methia of Dartmouth and several nieces and nephews. August was also the grandfather of the late Cathy E. Curran and brother of the late Vincent Fernandes.
His funeral will be Saturday beginning in the funeral home at 8:45 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at St Marys Church South Dartmouth at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home on Friday evening from 4-7 P.M. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
