June (Carmichael) Fitzgerald, R.N.
WWII Navy Veteran

ANDOVER: June (Carmichael) Fitzgerald, R.N., age 95, passed away at the Blaire House of Tewksbury on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017.

She was the beloved wife of the late Charles “Kenny” Fitzgerald.

Born in Andover on April 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Leslie R. Carmichael and Lillian G. (Holt) (Carmichael) Boutwell.

June was raised in Andover, attended Andover schools and graduated from the former Punchard High School in 1939.

In 1943, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy. June served during World War II as an Apprentice Seaman and was honorably discharged from active duty having achieved the rank of Parachute Rigger First Class.

Prior to her retirement, she ran a catering business, received a Licensed Practical Nursing Degree from Greater Lawrence Regional Technical Institute and then a Registered Nursing degree from Northern Essex Community College. She was employed as a Registered Nurse by New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham and then as Infection Control nurse at CAB Health and Recovery in Danvers.

June was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury, where she was a member of numerous clubs and committees including the Philatheas Group, the Missions Committee, the 20 Uppers Club, and was a volunteer at the Annual May Breakfast.

In addition, she was a volunteer at the Andover Senior Center, where she enjoyed helping in the kitchen packing food for meals on wheels delivery, filling orders for the luncheon deli service, greeting visitors, and demonstrating crocheting.

June enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, reading, chocolates, blueberry picking and spending time with her family in Liberty, Maine.

She is survived by her children, Lynda J. Fitzgerald of Byfield, Melanie J. Gerow and her husband Lloyd of Clinton, ME, Elizabeth K. Fitzgerald of Andover, David J. Fitzgerald and his wife Lesley of Newburyport, and Rebecca L. Hill and her husband Scott of Andover. She also leaves seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many extended family members.

June was pre-deceased by one brother and one step-sister.

Family and friends are invited to her Memorial service on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.at the First Baptist Church, 1500 Andover St., Rte. 133, Tewksbury. Private interment will be on a later date at Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover. Please Omit Flowers.
