BELLINGHAM: Shirley E. (Jones) Smart, age 85, a former longtime Natick resident, died peacefully on Thursday morning, January 19, 2017, at her Bellingham home.
She had been the devoted wife of the late John Smart, II.
Born in Weymouth and raised primarily in Hingham, she was a daughter of Fred and Arlene (Nichols) Jones. Shirley was a graduate of Hingham High School, married John in 1950, and settled in Natick ten years later.
Shirley enjoyed creating a warm and fun filled home for her growing family. She loved being a wife and mother, and over time welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the same enthusiasm. After John’s early death in 1981, she was employed with his longtime employer, Wellesley College, where Shirley added her work ethic and outgoing personality to the housekeeping group. An accomplished and prolific baker, she had a ball going on junkets with the Natick Seniors and loved playing bingo, day trips to Foxwoods, and even a couple of visits to Vegas. This open, caring, and generous lady will be missed by those privileged to know her.
Predeceased by her infant son Richard in 1963, and 45 year old daughter Heather in 2013, Shirley is survived by five children, John Smart, III, and his wife Lisa of Bellingham, Bonnie Bourque of Bellingham, with whom she made her home for the past nine years, Maxine Dolan and her husband Craig of Norfolk, Joseph D. Smart and his companion Barbara of Natick, and James Smart and his wife Bonnie of Natick; seven grandchildren, Jake, Alyssa, Kenneth, Jeff, Justin, Joseph, and Shawna; and many great-grandchildren.
Her services will be held in the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street at Natick Common, on Wednesday, January 25th at 12:30 PM. Burial will follow at Dell Park Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the Smart Family prior to the service from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM.
