Obituary

George Alexius Whitney, 38, of Washington D.C., passed away on December 18, 2016, while serving his country in Afghanistan.

Born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on February 16, 1978, Alexi, as he was known to his family, attended Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts, and Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. At Bates, he was a starting fullback in football, starting midfielder in lacrosse, and graduated Cum Laude with a major in Classics.
After college, Alexi served as a Captain with the 3rd Marine Reconnaissance Battalion in Anbar, Iraq in 2005. An avid reader and lover of horror movies, Alexi enjoyed spending time outdoors, with animals, his colleagues, and family.

He is survived by his mother, Caryn Whitney, of Wilmington, North Carolina; his father, George Whitney III, of Delray Beach, Florida; his sister, Larissa Whitney, and brother, Maximillian Whitney, both of Brooklyn, New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alexi’s memory to the Raider Project, the Third Option Foundation, and Brooks School.

A memorial service will be held at the Ashburn Chapel located at the Brooks School, 1160 Great Pond Rd, North Andover, MA 01845 on January 22, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Family and friends are cordially invited. At the request the family, guests should be seated no later than 1:45 PM. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the spring. The Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Whitney Family.
