Augusto J. Fernandes, 69

Dateline: Norton, MA

Augusto “Gus” Fernandes, age 69, of Norton, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

Born in Norton, MA on March 5, 1947, he was a loving and devoted son of the late Augusto and Mary (Rei) Fernandes. He grew up in Norton and was a 1965 graduate of Norton High School.

During the Vietnam War, he served in the United States Marine Corps. Following four years of proud and loyal service to his country, he was discharged from active duty on July 28, 1969 with the rank of Sergeant E5.

Prior to retiring, Gus had worked for over forty years as a Letter Sorting Machine Operator for the United States Postal Service at the South Boston Annex. In addition to living in Norton, he had also made his home in Dorchester for many years.

He was a communicant and former collector at St. Mary’s Church in Norton and had also attended St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield. He enjoyed playing golf and participating in golfing leagues with fellow workers. He also enjoyed spending time with family, and landscaping and gardening at home

He is survived by his dear brothers Donald P. Fernandes of Norton and Ronald P. Fernandes and his wife Valerie of Bridgewater. He was the adoring uncle of Donald Fernandes and his wife Silina . He was the cherished great uncle of Keira, Donald and Sean Fernandes, and Joseph and Hailie McGaughey. He is also survived by many cousins.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Saturday, January 21st at 10:00 in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power St., Norton. Military honors will follow at the conclusion of services. Burial will be private.

Visiting hours have been omitted and those wishing may remember Gus with a donation in his memory made to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St. Boston, MA 02108
