Donald R. Smith age 72 of Plymouth, formerly of Canton passed away after a short illness December 31st surrounded by his loving family. Born in Chelsea, he was raised in Norwood and graduated from Norwood High School. He went on to attend Brewster Academy in New Hampshire and earn his BA from Merrimac College. He was an English Teacher and Hockey Coach at Canton High School for 16 years and a member of the Mass State Hockey Coaches Assn. Don was an Insurance Broker for Dowling Insurance since 2000 and previously worked for American Hardware Mutual Insurance. He has been a member of the Bank of Canton Board of Trustees since 1998 and Chairman of the Board since 2012. Don was an avid golfer and a member of the Plymouth Country Club and a former member of Milton Hoosic Golf Club. Beloved husband of Anne Marie (Oberlander). Father of Donald R. Smith III and his wife Kathleen of Bridgewater and Christopher C. Smith and his wife Molly of W. Bridgewater. Brother of Carol Ann Kilroy of N. Attleboro, Theresa Donahue of Norwood, Stephen Smith of Attleboro and the late Marjorie E. Cummings and Michael Smith. Grandfather of Nicole, Matthew, CJ and Rachel. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Thursday 3-7 pm. Relatives and friends invited to attend a Funeral Blessing at St. Gerard Majella Church Canton Friday morning at 10:30. Burial private.
