Virgil Dorminy, 76, died December 4, 2016, at his residence after a long illness.
A memorial service will be held at Central United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 6 at 4:00 PM with the Reverends Keith Goodlett and BJ Funk presiding. A private interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service.
Mr. Dorminy was born June, 11, 1940, in Ben Hill County to the late John Wilmer and Elizabeth Wells Dorminy. He was educated at Fitzgerald High School, Oxford College of Emory, and the University of Georgia where he majored in business administration. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. After graduation, he enlisted in the Georgia National Guard for six years, serving the active duty at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Mr. Dorminy returned to Fitzgerald and entered agribusiness as Purina Feeds dealer and active farming. He was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture as district agent for the first agriculture census in Georgia. For over 30 years, he was a dairy and beef cattle farmer as a member of Dairymen, Inc.
Mr. Dorminy was a past member of Fitzgerald Jaycees and the Fitzgerald Rotary Club. He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities, most recently as president of Methodist Men and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He participated in the Walk to Emmaus and made the journey possible for others.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Lu Ward Dorminy, and three children, Paul Dorminy, Suzanne Dorminy Reaves and son-in-law Todd Reaves, and Ellen Dorminy Burke and son-in-law, Michael Burke. Also surviving are four grandsons: Will Reaves, Jay Reaves, Ward Burke and Charlie Burke and a sister, Catherine Dorminy Bagley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marion Dorminy Clements.
