Heike L. Brooke
Augusta – Mrs. Heike L. Brooke, 68, beloved wife of Arthur L. Brooke, entered into rest and was taken to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, January 25, 2011.
A Celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 2:00 PM at The Church of The Good Shepherd. A reception will follow the service in the Parish Hall.
Mrs. Brooke was a native of Hanover, Germany. Her father, Gerd, was a test pilot for Messerschmidt, a company that produced and tested aircraft. In 1943, he achieved the world speed record of 1003 KPH in a Me 262 airplane. Following in his footsteps, Heike earned her private pilot’s license in 1978. She lived most of her life in Augsburg. She attended the University of Mainz in Germersheim, but left the University in 1966, to come the U.S.A. to marry Art.
She had met the challenges of two bouts with cancer and won, but it returned with a vengeance and took her life. Heike was known as the “Hat Lady” due to her many chemotherapy treatments.
Heike was a very joyous person, and was truly fun to be around. Heike worked in the mortgage loan business starting in the fall of 1973. She retired from Georgia Bank and Trust in August of 2010, after 10 plus years. Many of her co-workers claimed that she was the smartest, most compassionate and well versed person they had ever met.
In addition to her husband, Arthur, she is survived by her unofficially adopted children, Susan Pullin of Reston, VA., Mike Sleeper and wife, Kelley of Evans, and Mike Tan and wife, Matilde of San Ramon, CA., as well as her brothers, Uwe Lindner, Klaus Salzmann and Horst Salzmann, all of Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerd and Vera Lindner, and her brother, Axel Lindner.
Fortunately, Heike’s legacy will live on, as she made many shawls and afghans for the Prayer Shawl Ministry at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA., 30904.
