Matthew R. "Matt" Uto
Matthew R. Uto, 90 years, of Brockton died Sunday December 27, 2009 at his home under the care of hospice. He was the loving husband of Elba G. (Petruccelli) Uto for 63 years. Born in Brockton a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Bounassissi) Uto, Mr. Uto was a 1937 graduate of Brockton High School. A lifelong resident of Brockton, he enjoyed winters in Melbourne, Florida for the past 20 years.
During WW II Mr. Uto was a medic in the US Army and had served the Pacific Theater earning many service medals. He told his family he was always thankful that Harry Truman had dropped the atomic bomb to end the war; otherwise he would have been part of the first wave to land on mainland Japan.
Mr. Uto was a self employed barber who retired from the Village Barber Shop on Pearl Street, Brockton in 1985 and previously operated a shop in the Enterprise Building in downtown. He was a member of the local Masters Barber Union, the Club National and a life member of the VFW Whitman. Mr. Uto enjoyed watching sports, gardening and golf. He was a member of DW Golf Course and most recently was employed as a ranger at Palm Garden Golf Course in Melbourne.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons Anthony Uto of Mauldin, So. Carolina; Robert Uto of Brockton and Don Uto and his wife Laureen of Brockton. He also leaves four grandchildren Andrea James and Jessica Uto of So. Carolina and Danielle and Ryan Uto of Brockton and a great grandson Jacob. He was the brother of Adeline Siciliano of Brockton and the late Joseph and Olive Uto. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 9 am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10 am. Visitation will be 8:30 to 9:30 prior to the mass. Donations in Matt’s name may be made to Old Colony Hospice One Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
