WAYLAND: Rita I (Palmer) Burke, 92, died peacefully in the care and comfort of her family on Monday, October 29, 2018 following a period of declining health.
She was born in Somerville on May 13, 1926 the daughter of the late Carl A. Palmer and Amelia (Barone) Palmer.
Rita was the beloved wife for 30 years of the late Sergeant Edward J. Burke of the Wayland Police Department who died on August 10, 1983.
She is survived by her loving children Marie A. Burke and her husband James F. Burke, Jr. of Wayland and John J. Burke of Marlborough. Cherished grandmother of Shannon M. Burke of Dorchester and Kelsey A. Burke of New Zealand. She leaves her longtime companion Robert Perodeau of Port Charlotte, FL. She was the godmother of J. Kevin Courchine and his wife Judy A. Courchine of Wayland. Aunt of Cathy Anne Paschal and her husband Carl Paschal of St. Simons, GA and Carl J. Wojcik and his wife Bianca Wojcik of Fairfax Station, VA. Sister of the late Bernice C. Wojcik, Grace I. Bowen and Lillian A. Adams. Also survived by many great nieces and nephews.
Rita has been a lifelong resident of Wayland and graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1944. She had a long career as a secretary with Liberty Mutual in Weston before retiring. Rita has been a lifelong communicant of Saint Zepherin Church and was active with the womens club, apple pie making group and the church fairs.
She enjoyed working as an inspector during Federal, state and local town elections for Precinct Two. She also spent many years gathering information for the town census.
Rita was devoted to her family and time spent with them. She enjoyed summering in Essex and wintering in Port Charlotte, FL for many years creating fond memories with family and friends.
Visitations will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte. 30), Wayland.
Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 9:15 am followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Good Shepherd Parish at St. Zepherin Church, 99 Main Street (Rte. 27), Wayland.
Interment will follow in the Burke family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland.
