Gertude Van Iderstine Phillips
11/22/2017

WESTON: Gertrude Van Iderstine Phillips died in her home in Weston, MA, on November 22, 2017 at the side of her beloved husband of 73 years, Thomas L. Phillips. In addition to Tom, Gert is survived by her four children and their spouses – Patty & Bob Fraser of Concord, MA; Bobbie & Dan Suratt of Wellesley, MA; Debbie Phillips & Lee Robertson of Rye, NY; and Tom Phillips & Ellen Hopkins of New York, NY. She’ll be dearly missed by her 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was the glue that kept her large extended family together across four generations – never missing a birthday or anniversary. Her home and her cooking were the centerpiece of family holidays, and Thanksgiving just wasn’t the same without her homemade pies.

A graduate of Wheelock College, Gert’s lifelong friends describe her as “gracious, energetic, resourceful and trustworthy.” Her energy was infectious, and you could find her on the tennis courts well into her 80s. When not playing tennis, or singing in the church choir, Gert was an active member of the Christian Women’s Connection for more than 50 years. CWC, like each organization Gert became involved with, benefited greatly from her creativity, commitment and thoughtfulness.

Gert was a great bargain hunter and a navigator of short cuts, a game player and a master of every kind of puzzle, and she left her family with a lifetime of “Gertisms” and memories they’ll treasure forever.

Services will be held at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road, Wayland on Saturday December 2, 2017 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Gert’s honor may be sent to The Christian Women’s Connection (www.stonecroft.org),
Arrangements entrusted to the care of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Wayland. For condolences please visit www.johncbryantfuneralhome.com.
