Obituary

WORCESTER-James M. Scanlon, 79, of Worcester passed away Friday, May 5 at home.

He leaves five children, Doreen D. Scanlon of Boston, Seamus M. Scanlon and his wife, Julie of North Berwick, Scotland, Joan A. Morrissey and her husband, Terence of Rutland, Joseph B. Scanlon and his wife, Lauren of Brooklyn, NY and Peter F. Scanlon and his wife, Jackie of Manhattan, NY; six grandchildren, Liam, Bridget, Finley, Emilia, Louisa and Thomas and his former wife, Patricia J. (Platz) Scanlon of Charlton. Five siblings, Beatrice, John, Thomas, Katherine and Peter predeceased him. He was born in Manhattan, New York son of Irish Immigrants from County Sligo, Thomas and Mary Ann (Meehan) Scanlon and has lived in Worcester since 1983. Jim graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and St. Francis College both in Brooklyn, before joining the Army, serving in Germany during the Cold War.

Jim was a member of the IBEW Local #96 for 32 years, retiring as a technician from Verizon. He was a member of the Tatnuck American Legion, #388 and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Jim enjoyed spending time at the Ocean, with his grandchildren, deep sea fishing and reading a good western or war novel.

He was known for his superb singing voice and he enjoyed music, both old and new. He liked to spend time with his friends, Jack, Dave and Danny, playing cards and sharing a laugh.

A Funeral will be held Tuesday, May 9 from CALLAHAN FAY CASWELL Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street with a Mass at 10AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in Saint John's Cemetery. Visiting Hours are Monday, May 8 from 4 to 7PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame Hospice Care, 555 Plantation Street, Worcester, 01605.
