Obituary


Evans, GA – Dr. Horace G. Blalock, Jr., 87, entered into rest on Thursday, April 13, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Rd. Chapel. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Born in Fredricksburg, VA to the late Horace G. Blaclock, Sr. and Janie Elam Blalock, Horace spent his early years on a dairy farm in Baskerville, VA. Horace was a graduate of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA and the University of Georgia Veterinary College in Athens, GA. Horace made Veterinary Medicine his lifelong endeavor and loved being a veterinarian. He loved animals both large and small, including farm animals and Arabian horses. Horace collected many awards, ribbons, and accolades from showing and riding Arabians. He was sure to introduce his children and grandchildren to his love of Arabian horses, as well as, spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing. During his career, Horace was a member of the Georgia Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. He was also a member of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, where he was past president and received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Horace also served nationally on the House of Delegates for the American Veterinary Medical Association. Horace was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta and served as an usher for many years. He was a former member of the Forest Hills Lions Club and more recently the Augusta Lions Club. Throughout the years, he was a member and served in many civic clubs and organization in the Augusta area. Horace was a gentleman and loved helping others.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Doris P. Blalock; two sons; Guy Blalock of Evans, GA, Tim Blalock of Beaufort, SC, two daughters; Beth Smith (Rick) of Lugoff, SC, Ginger Ferguson (Bill) of Evans, GA, one brother; Bill Blalock (Doma) of Baskerville, VA, two sisters; Jane Drumwright of Hopewell, VA, Martha Michael of Midlothian, VA, seven grandchildren; Ashley Smith Williams (Chris), Lauren Smith, Brad Smith, Matthew Ferguson (Claire), Austin Ferguson, Blake Ferguson, Wyatt Ferguson, two great grandchildren; Ellie Williams, Aubrey Williams and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Horace was preceded in death by his brother; the late Thomas Daniel Blalock.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Georgia Carolina Veterinary Medical Association.
