Obituary

Kassiani ‘Kathryn’ (Labovites) Milio of Worcester passed away on January 7, 2017 peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones after a long illness. Kathryn leaves behind her devoted husband Kosta ‘Gus’ Milio, her only daughter Sophia Milio Campbell, her son-in-law Gerard J. Campbell, Esq., and her beloved grandchildren, Carina-Victoria and Christopher. She also leaves her sister and best friend, A. Mary Labovites, and godson Christopher Poulides. Additionally she leaves extended family in Worcester, other parts of the United States, Europe and Canada.
Kathryn was born in Argyrokastro, Albania to parents of Greek descent. She came to the USA as a very young child with her parents George P. Labovites of Douviani and Victoria Moutsios of Delvinaki, Greece. Once the family settled in Worcester, she went by the name of Kathryn, and was later known by everyone in the community as ‘Kay’.
Kay attended North High School in Worcester where she was valedictorian of her class, and was a graduate of Worcester State Teachers College. She also completed graduate coursework in special education at Boston University. She was a teacher for the Worcester Public Schools for many years, completing her career as a fifth grade teacher at Flagg Street School. She left teaching in order to help operate the motel business she owned with her husband, first in Ocean City, MD and then at Cape Cod. Even after selling the business, Kay spent many summers at the Cape with her family. She enjoyed sitting on the front porch of her summer home reading a good book, sipping a coffee, and breathing in the ocean air.
Kay was a member of the Worcester Art Museum and spent many years as a volunteer in its education department, something she truly loved doing in her retirement. She was also a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church and served as a board member of both the Hellenic Arts Society and Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society.
Kay loved to travel and in addition to visiting several European countries, she spent many summers in Greece and Italy visiting family. She was an avid reader, an amazing gardener, a fantastic baker of greek desserts, and was very talented in sewing, needlepointing, and knitting. Most of all though she loved being a ‘Yiayia’ and spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren. She absolutely adored them and it brought her pure joy to see her Carina and Christopher in these later years when they would visit her.
Kay was known for her beautiful smile, her inherent kindness, warm generous heart, positive attitude, and for placing her family’s needs before her own. She was diminutive in stature but grand in spirit. She hosted often and her home was a welcoming gathering place for family and friends who will miss her profoundly.
The family would like to make a special mention of Kay’s physician, Dr. D. Agiomavritis, who provided her exceptional care through the years, as well as the incredible people, including Notre Dame hospice staff, who compassionately cared for Kay in her home.
Her funeral is Friday, January 13th from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a service at 11:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, January 12th from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of lowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
