Obituary

Lincolnton - Dorothy “June” Pursley died September 28, 2016 at her parents’ home in Lincolnton, GA after an extended illness.
She was born in Augusta, GA to Dr. Norman and Florence Pursley. June graduated from Butler High School in 1981 and was a 1986 graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in International Relations- Political Science with a minor in Spanish. Through college, she worked at the Georgia Retardation Center in Athens and later at Gracewood State School and Hospital near Augusta because she had a heart for working with people with disabilities. She later decided to get a Para-legal Certificate and worked at Health Master and the US Government Trustee Office before realizing her dream of teaching special needs children. June completed her Masters in Special Education and worked at Langford Middle School in Richmond County for years until she became ill and decided to teach in Warren County so that she could live with her parents while under treatment. She taught in Lincoln County briefly before leaving because of her illness. June’s vibrant personality, generous welcoming spirit, strong faith, and contagious laugh touched so many lives! She received several honors as a teacher and was well loved by her family, friends, students, parents, and peers.
She is survived by her loving family: parents, Dr. and Mrs. Norman B. Pursley, and nine siblings: Dr. Suzanne Pursley-Crotteau (Gary), Brundage Pursley, Jr., Dr. George Pursley (Brigid), Cathy Cooley, Claire Pursley-Watson (Aaron), Bill Pursley (Kathleen), Louise Waters (Norman), Elaine Myers (Jack), and Alice Woods. She has twelve nephews and eleven nieces, and four great nephews and three great nieces.

June’s family will receive visitors from 5:30 – 7 on Friday, September 30th at Platt’s Funeral Home - Belair Road Chapel, with a Prayer Vigil at 5:00. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Saint Mary’s on the Hill Catholic Church on Saturday, October 1st at 11:00 AM with the Rev. David Arnoldt officiating.
