Obituary

Carmela Florine (Dilettoso) Nutter passed away on September 13, 2016 at Dodge Park in Worcester, her home for the last 2 ½ years. Carm was born April 12, 1923 in Thomas WV, the 2nd child of the late Salvatore & Mary (Totedo) Dilettoso. Her father was a miner, but in the 1920’s was able to scrape together enough money to open The Roma Restaurant in Thomas. Being the oldest daughter in a 1st generation Italian-American family Carm became a second mother to her siblings and worked tirelessly to help make The Roma very successful. Later in life she always had stories about The Roma -filling the beer cooler for the big Saturday night dances for the miners and loggers; the $.25 spaghetti and meatball dinners; her father’s endless generosity to strangers. She met her future husband in first grade at Thomas Elementary School and later at Thomas High School was the President of “The N.U.T.T. Club”. No one ever really found out what exactly was the point of The N.U.T.T. Club, but Carm did marry her 1st grade sweetheart Harry A. Nutter, Jr. on June 29, 1942. She had been training as a nurse at the beginning of the war, but left after she married Harry and they soon were expecting their first child. Mary Yvonne was born on December 29, 1943, and tragically died 13 months later. Harry served in the Army Air Corps and Carm went back to The Roma, but after the war Carm and Harry lived in Hampton VA where they had four more children. They moved to Longmeadow MA in 1957 where their sixth child was born. Carm was a communicant of St. Mary’s Parish since 1957 and volunteered in many ways with the church. For years she worked every week for and donated to Open Pantry, was a member of the St. Mary’s Ladies Guild and a member of the Honor Color Guard. In addition, she was employed at Blueberry Hills Elementary School as the Assistant Librarian for close to 20 years. She loved bowling and for quite a while was in a Monday night women's league and a Friday night couples league with Harry. She was very talented at crochet and crafted all sorts of doilies, Christmas ornaments, tablecloths and even several gowns which she often wore to special family events. Carm was a woman of complete devotion to her family first and foremost, but also to all children, to her friends, to her church and to her beloved Harry who passed away on February 27, 2014. She was a gregarious, passionate, feisty, protective woman and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is predeceased by brothers Pat and James Dilettoso, and survived by sisters Rose Evans and Virginia DePollo and her husband John, daughter & son-in-law Suzanne & Jerry Morin of Eastham MA, daughter & son-in-law Mary Louise & Philip Jackson of Mattapoisett MA, son & daughter-in-law Harry III & Ellen of Springfield MA, son & daughter-in-law Samuel & Carol of Northboro MA and son Jim of Northampton MA. Carm also leaves grandchildren Tracy White, James Winttuck, Jeremy Morin, Jill Cherundolo, Bethany Anderson, Benjamin Nutter, James Nutter and Rousseau Nutter and great grandchildren Andrew, Ashley & Nicholas Morin, Matthew & Megan Cherundolo, Harrison Nutter and Zaine Anderson.
Her funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s in Longmeadow MA on Saturday September 24th at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Heart Association or the Longmeadow Adult Center. Carm and Harry’s ashes will be interred together next June in Thomas WV with Mary Yvonne on what would have been their 75th wedding anniversary.
