Obituary

Augusta, GA – Dr. Edgardo Mucha, age 78, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 14, 2016. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan Polonus Mucha. In addition, he is survived by his children, Teodoro Edgardo Mucha, II (Caitlin), Maria Elena Mucha, Carlos Alexander Mucha (Donna), Dr. Susan Margaret Mucha, daughter-in-law, Chrystelle Cuminal Mucha, grandchildren, Isabelle Alicia Mucha, Matthew Teodoro Mucha, and Nathan Cariglio. He is also survived by his sisters, Olfe Illescas (Luis), Sonia Pomalazo, his 103-year-old mother-in-law, Margaret Roch Polonus, many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Dr. Mucha is the son of the late Teodoro and Maria Mucha of Lima, Peru. He graduated from Cayetano Heredia University Medical School in Lima, and did residencies at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He did a fellowship in cardiology at Ochsner Foundation Clinic in New Orleans and served as an assistant professor of medicine at Tulane University. He was in private practice for four years at St. Francis before continuing a cardiology fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia, where he served as associate clinical professor of medicine for many years.

He was founding father of Doctors Hospital and he and his partner Dr. Kenneth Reeves were the first cardiologists at Doctors. He served as chief of medicine for several terms at Doctors. He was a champion of the downtrodden and treated those in need with grace, compassion, and a spirit of selfless service.

Edgardo enjoyed traveling the world with his family, but his favorite vacation spot was closer to home – Kiawah Island. He was an accomplished artist and landscaper and was an avid fan of international soccer, the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgia Bulldogs, and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Full disclosure: He WILL be rooting for the Fighting Irish over the Bulldogs Fall 2017.

He was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, where the funeral will take place on Friday, August 19, 2016 with Fr. John Markham celebrant. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00 AM in the narthex. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM.
