Obituary

WEBSTER- Stavros Pappas, 89, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016 at UMass Memorial Health Care Center surrounded by his loving family.

Stavros is survived by his son Sam Pappas and his wife Evelyn of Webster, and two daughters Stavroula Foutsitzis and her husband Arthur of Dubai, and Olympia Margaritidis of Cumberland, RI., two sisters Melpo Tsoutzopoulos and her husband Frikso, and Alexandra Panayiotopoulos and her husband Yianni, and one brother Yiorgo and his wife Niki all of Athens, Greece. Six Grandchildren Stephen Pappas of Webster, Charles Pappas of Natick & Jimmy Pappas of West Roxbury, Iliana and Sophia Foutsitzis of Dubai and Chrysoula Margaritidis of Cumberland, RI, 5 great-grandchildren Michael, Spiro, Alexander, Stella, and Maximos Pappas, and many nieces and nephews in the US and Greece. He is predeceased by his wife Evangelia (Karayiannis) in 2013, his brother Panayiotis Pappas, his son-in-law Konstantinos Margaritidis and his grandson Nektarios Margaritidis.

Stavros was born in Agios Kosmas, Epirus, Greece on January 1, 1927. In 1946 he registered to train as a traffic cop in Athens and was soon transferred to a small village in Epirus. At age 19 he enlisted to fight in the Civil War. He met his wife in Konitsa, Greece and they were wed on February 20, 1948. Varying work experiences as construction of roadways and military airbase in Andravida, Peloponesse, Volo and in the coal mines of Thesprotia had him traveling throughout Greece. He migrated to Belgium in 1956 and worked as a coal miner until 1967. In 1958 he was allowed to bring his wife and son Sotirios and in 1959 his daughter Stavroula. He worked for Mariemont-Bascoup in construction of the Metro in Brussels and as a truck driver for Leon de Bois hauling logs from Belgium to Switzerland. On December 24, 1967, together with his wife and 3 children, he migrated to the US and situated in Webster, MA. Stavros worked as a weaver for many years in Pasco, RI and Fabyan, CT. from 1977 to 1980, together with his wife, Stavros owned Village Pizza on Greenwood St. in Worcester. Stavros retired at the age of 62 and then began to travel with his wife, family and friends. 

Stavros was a member of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Webster, which he served as the treasurer for 7 years. He loved to garden, was an excellent cook, and had a passion for cultivating his grapevines and making wine and traditional Greek ouzo and raki. He cherished being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always giving them advice and joking with them in his subtle way.

Calling Hours for Stavros will be Friday, May 27, 2016 from 5-7PM at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 35 Lake Parkway Webster. Funeral Service and Trisagion Service will be held Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 10AM at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Please meet directly at the church. Burial will follow with his wife at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Webster.

Funeral Services are under the direction of ROBERT J. MILLER FUNERAL HOME and LAKE CHAPEL, 366 School St., Webster.
