Obituary

Mary-Ellen Smith Bergeron, 72, of New Bedford, died Thursday October 2, 2014 at Sacred Heart Home. She was the beloved wife of Norman Alix Bergeron; they had been married for 49 years.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph Robert and Mary Foster Smith, she lived in New Bedford all of her life. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Mrs. Bergeron was a graduate of Holy Family High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Worcester State College and a Master of Education degree from Bridgewater State College. She had a long, successful and rewarding career as a teacher and administrator with the New Bedford Public School System for 38 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as a trustee on the New Bedford Public Library Board.

Mary-Ellen loved and was loved. She was a loyal friend, an anonymous benefactor, a loving daughter, a faithful wife, a beloved sister and a cherished aunt.

She is survived by her husband; her siblings, Sally Ann Spilman Cates, Peter Foster Smith, and Jay Robert Smith, all of Roxboro, NC, and Paul Smith and his wife Paulette of Berkley, and several nieces and nephews and her beloved nephew, Charles H. Spilman, her special nephew, Michael Caswell and her special niece, Kathleen Caswell Burke.

Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday October 11, 2014 at 10 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday October 10, 2014 from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Catholic Social Services, 238 Bonney St., New Bedford, MA 02744 or to the charity of one's choice.
