Obituary

John Sylvia, Jr., 85, of New Bedford died Wednesday February 26, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Laurinda (Caiado) Sylvia; they had been married for 62 years.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late John and Bertha M. (Wood) Sylvia. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and New Bedford Institute of Technology (now UMass-Dartmouth).

He was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

Mr. Sylvia was formerly employed as a chemist at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for many years until his retirement. He later worked at CVS Pharmacy.

Mr. Sylvia served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid golfer, and loved his family, friends and the South End.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynne M. Sylvia and her husband John Reynolds of Northborough, and Deborah J. Charwick and her husband Bruce of Palmer; three grandchildren, Mary Katherine Reynolds of Northborough, Jonathan Charwick and his wife Sharon of Franklin, and Sarah Charwick of Salem; and a great-granddaughter, Brielle Charwick of Franklin.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Martin's Episcopal Church, P.O.
