WORCESTER: Peter T. “Brother” Martin, 84, died peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at his home, with his wife and family by his side, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Therese R. (Dyer) Martin; six daughters, Therese Richardson and her husband Michael of Worcester, Judith Beley and her husband Eugene of California, Mary Martin of Worcester, Jeanne Gohary and her husband Robert of Worcester, Darlene Parseghian and her husband Peter of Shrewsbury, Patricia Low and her husband Brian of Worcester; a sister, Rita M. Flint of Worcester; a sister-in-law, Joan Dyer of New Jersey; six grandsons, Jeffrey Beley and his wife Heather of California, Michael Richardson and his wife Monica, Martin and Phillip Gohary, Ryan and Luke Parseghian; a great granddaughter, Sydney Beley of California; and several nephews and nieces including Bernard (Jimmy) Schofield, with whom he had a very special relationship. He was predeceased by three sisters, Gladys M. D’Amelio, Beatrice T. Brewer and Shirley G. Roy.
He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Peter Martin and Mae M. (Butler) Martin Carvill and attended Commerce High School. In 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a first class radar man. A veteran of the Korean War, he served 5 years of active duty; including two years on the USS Philippine Sea and 2 years on the USS Glynn. In 1955, he reenlisted and served 4 years in the Naval Reserves. After his discharge, he attended Mass Radio and TV in Boston.
Peter was a self-employed TV repairman for 18 years. He then worked at Vin’s TV until his retirement in 1992. Earlier in his career, he was a steelworker for United Structural Steel. He was a long time member of St. Bernard’s Parish, now known as Our Lady of Providence Parish, a member of the USS Philippine Sea CV47 Association, a former member of the Shrewsbury Knights of Columbus and the West Boylston VFW Post.
Pete and Terry were married on September 18, 1954 at Immaculate Conception Church in Worcester. They made their home and raised their family in Worcester and loved to go ballroom dancing on Saturday nights. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandsons talking about the Navy, baseball and the good old days. Once Pete learned a song or poem, he could recite them for years to come. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
The family would like to thank all of the caring health professionals who have helped through the past few months, particularly those who have been beside Peter and his family most recently.
CALLING HOURS are 6 to 8 P.M on MONDAY, NOV. 18 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 A.M. on TUESDAY, NOV. 19 at OUR LADY OF PROVIDENCE PARISH, 228 Lincoln St., followed by entombment at St. John’s Cemetery Mausoleum.
