James P. Souza
James P. Souza, 92 of Provincetown died Sunday, February 24th at Seashore Point in Provincetown. His beloved wife of 66 years, Barbara (Messer) Souza died three weeks earlier.
Born in Provincetown, son of he late Joseph and Maria (Correiro) Souza, he was a commercial fisherman. However, his career was interrupted when he enlisted in the US Coast Guard at the outbreak of WW II. After the war, he returned to Provincetown and started his own building company, which he ran until his retirement. He also served as a town constable for 40 years. After retirement he continued to work, for the Town Parking Department at the Municipal Lot.
He was an Honorary Life Member of the Walter Welsh Council, Knights of Columbus where he served two terms as Grand Knight. He also was a Life Member and former Commander of the Lewis A. Young Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Rotary Club and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a son Allan Souza and his wife Eva of Brewster, MA, a daughter Cynthia Days and her husband Joseph of North Truro, MA and Naples, FL. Six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive him.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by brothers Manuel and Joseph Souza as well as sisters Mary Carter and Wilhemina Armaral.
A Funeral Mass for both he and his wife will be celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church 11 Prince St. Provincetown on Thursday February 28, 2013 at 10:00am. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4-7pm at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown. Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery.
