WORCESTER: Sandra L. Mayes, 62, died New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2012 at St. Vincent Hospital, after being stricken ill on Dec. 11th at the Worcester Court House.
She leaves her partner of 35 years, Mary Monica Miner; her daughter, Susan S. Mayes; and her beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
Sandy is also survived by her fellow volunteers and the staff at Pathways for Change, formerly known as the Rape Crisis Center of Central Mass, with whom she shared the goal of supporting survivors of rape and reducing its occurrence.
As a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester, she also leaves her many friends and fellow congregants with whom she shared a beloved community. Through her work as an attorney, she also leaves her former colleagues at Community Legal Aid as well as her current colleagues at the Massachusetts Justice Project with whom she shared a passion for justice.
She was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, daughter of the late Henry and Bessie (Martin) Mayes. She graduated from Middletown High School and Miami University in Oxford, OH. She then received a Master’s Degree and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Kentucky. She enjoyed sharing events with her fellow China group families who adopted their children together in China.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 2 P.M. on SATURDAY, JAN. 19 in the UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH of WORCESTER, 90 Holden St. There are no calling hours. After cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family.
