Norman Hinsey
September 21, 2011

Norman W. Hinsey, Sr., 75, of Waban on September 21, 2011. Born in Philadelphia, he spent his childhood in Wyncote, PA and was a graduate of Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia and Tufts University. He is survived by his wife Eleanor (Ellie), his daughter Ellen, of Paris, his son Norman, of New York City and Haddonfield, NJ, his granddaughter Vera, a student at Rutgers University, his grandson Derek, of Haddonfield, NJ, and his sister Claire Warren, of Spokane, WA. After a 35-year career at the Missile Systems Division of Raytheon in Bedford, MA, he took early retirement in 1994. His work at Raytheon began with applied orbital mechanics for satellites in the 1960's and later, as a Principal Engineer, he was responsible for the management and technical direction of several NATO missile defense system engineering programs. His career spanned the entire cold war period and, never comfortable with the fact that he was helping to create weapons, he took satisfaction in the fact that the missiles he helped develop never needed to be launched. In retirement he enjoyed his golf, his grandchildren, reading natural history and poetry, science and cosmology news, keeping up with The New York Review of Books, and following the fortunes of the Red Sox. At his request, his body has been donated to Harvard Medical School for the purposes of medical research and education. "I grow old … I grow old … I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled." T. S. Eliot.
