Obituary

Mrs. Louise R. Hancock, 97, of Ocilla, died Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at the Osceola Nursing Home in Ocilla.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 9, 2007, at the Ocilla Baptist Church with Dr. Jay Hancock officiating, eulogies by Ruby Nell Courson and Jim Allison. Interment will follow in the Ocilla Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until the funeral hour on Friday at the Ocilla Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hancock was born July 21, 1910 in Cordele, Georgia to the late Archie and Nellie Dorminy Russell. She moved to Ocilla in 1927 from Cordele. Mrs. Hancock retired from GTE in 1975 after 25 years of service. She was an active member of the Ocilla Baptist Church for over 70 years, the Friendship Sunday school class, a former Sunday school teacher, Sunbeam leader and a member of the WMU. During Senior Week in February of this year, she was recognized as a Distinguished Older Georgian at the Capitol in Atlanta, which was based on the contributions, made over her lifetime on a local and state level. She was a mentor to many children and was very active with her two children, assisting as a Den Mother with the Boy Scouts. She and her husband helped many people in the community by traveling many miles to carry them to doctor appointments and hospital visits in Atlanta, Macon and Jacksonville.

Mrs. Hancock is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Emily & Larry Neighbors of Thomaston, GA; son and daughter-in-law, James ‘Jim” Newton & Carol Hancock of Atlanta, GA; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, James Newton “Newt” Hancock, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
