Obituary

Methuen, MA- Margaret R. (McCarthy) Flynn, died at home Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lawrence, MA to William and Katherine (McCarthy) McCarthy, Margaret would have turned 92 on October 22nd. A longtime resident of Lawrence, Margaret moved to Methuen in 1987 and summered in Rye, NH with her family.

Margaret attended St. Augustine’s Grammar School on Tower Hill , St. Mary’s High school and then graduated from Lawrence High School in 1936. During World War II, she worked for United States Rationing Board. Upon her marriage she devoted her life to raising her children and nephew. She later worked as a criminal clerk at the Lawrence District Court and retired in 1981. Her retirement years were blessed with spending time with her grandchildren, family, and many friends.

She was a life long communicant of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish formerly St. Augustine’s Parish on Tower Hill and was active in parish activities where she volunteered countless hours for the parish and elementary school. She was a twenty year volunteer at the Holy Family Hospital Gift Shop, a member of the Holy Family Auxiliary, St. Clare League of Catholic Women, and the Hibernians.


The widow of Thomas E. Flynn who died in 1985, Margaret is survived by her children, the Honorable Patricia A. Flynn of Methuen, Nancy J. and her husband Peter Giarrusso of Derry, NH, James A. and his wife Ann Marie of Georgetown, four grandchildren, Laura M. Flynn, Juliane Flynn, Thomas E. Flynn and Allyson M. Flynn, all of Georgetown. She is also survived by her nephew W. Brian McCarthy of Dale City, VA, a first cousin, Paul Carty of County Mayo, Ireland, as well as many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and several cousins. Margaret was pre-deceased by her brother Frank J. McCarthy as well as many life long friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Friday, September 5th, from 3:00p.m. – 8:00pm at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St, Methuen. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 6th 2008, at 11:00am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, St. Augustine’s Chapel on 124 Ames St. in Lawrence. Burial will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery also in Lawrence, MA. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel ( formerly St. Augustine’s) Catholic School 526 Lowell St. Lawrence, MA 01841 or the Merrimack Valley Hospice 360 Merrimack St,#9 Lawrence, MA.
