Gene Daniels, 70, of Ocilla, Georgia died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Emory Midtown Hospital in Atlanta.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, December 11 at Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Bro. Travis Fussell, Elder Jerry Barrs and Elder Jimmy Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-9 Friday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Daniels was born September 4, 1940 in Irwin County to the late Thomas and Mildred Griffin Daniels and was raised by his grandparents, Horace & Weltha Griffin. Mr. Daniels lived in Irwin County all of his life, graduating from Irwin County High School in 1959. He was a farmer and crop adjustor for Rain & Hail Insurance Company. Mr. Daniels was a member of Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church where he was chairman of the deacons, on the cemetery committee, former Sunday school superintendent and church treasurer. He was recognized for his peanut production and was past-president of the Young Farmers of Irwin County. Mr. Daniels was recognized for his peanut production and was president in 1977 of the Irwin County Young Farmers Association where he received the Outstanding Chapter President Award in 1977 and the 40 Acre Peanut Award in 1977 and 1978.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Mollie Stokes Daniels; daughter and son-in-law: Carol Jean & Kell D. Whitley; grandsons: Kellton Gene and Lonnie Dean Whitley; brothers and sister-in-law: James Riley & Paula Daniels and Bruce Daniels, all of Ocilla; sister: Bonnie Scott of Tifton as well as several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Murphy Daniels and a grandson, Daniel Aaron Whitley.
