Don Max Walker, 89, of Anderson, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019, due to a recent illness.
Don was born July 29, 1929 in Kirklin, to Rev. Walter E. Walker and Jennie O'Rogers Walker.
Don began his education in the One Room School house in Linwood. His next school was an elementary school close to Florida Station, named Leach School. He graduated from the eighth grade in this country school setting. Don was ready to go to Anderson High School in Anderson. He graduated with the class of 1947 earning the National Honor Society of secondary schools.
After graduating from Anderson High School, he was hired by Guide Lamp Division of General Motors in Anderson. His first assignment was in the drafting department making head lamps and tail lamp drawings.
The Korean War concerned Don; consequently, he took a leave from Guide and joined the United States Air Force. He was sent overseas to be with the 67th Tac Rec. Kimpo, Korea, 1953. After serving his time in the Korean War, as S/Sgt. Don M. Walker, he returned to Guide Lamp to the drafting department. After a period of time, Don moved to the position of Chief Draftsman of Guide Division GMC. He was 1 of 50 Guide winners in the Golden Milestone letter writing contest.
General Motors was making company changes and Inland Fisher Guide was now the company name. The new company assigned Don as the liaison between the Anderson plant and the European countries who were doing business with Inland Fisher Guide.
Traveling to the European companies gave Don time to research his brother's resting grave. Sgt Lowell Keith Walker "Pete" was killed during World War II Battle of the Bulge. Pete walked around a corner of a building and a sniper's bullet hit him. He died in his buddy's arms. Pete is resting in the Netherlands Cemetery, the only American Military cemetery in the Netherlands in the village of Margraten, east of Maastricht. The cemetery with all the white crosses is unbelievable to the eyes and mind.
Don was a basketball -day and night- sports fan. The Anderson Indians gave Don years of enjoyment. He kept his season tickets while he was in the Air Force in Kimpo, Korea.
The next proof of Don's continued enjoyment of basketball along with his love of travel. He had a great plan. We would buy basketball season tickets to Lubbock, Texas and watch Coach Knight and the Red Raiders play the great sport! We kept that plan for 10 years. We had a great time- basketball, travel and antiquing alone the way.
Yes, we were married-me, Ruth E. Jones, married October 14, 1956. Don Walker.
Don planned basketball trips to Alaska to watch the "Great Shoot Out", New York for the NIT and several other states for the interesting tournaments.
Final proof, Don purchased reading material, Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and other publications which fit right in with his other love- reading - books of various subjects, history, sports and maps.
Don retired from Inland Fisher Guide, Anderson, Indiana in 1992 with 44 years of service.
In Don's free time, he helped me with our Antique business in Carmel, and North Indy Antique Mall in Indianapolis.
We are in Antique Malls now and are happy to have mall employees do the selling for me.
Don was happy to share his knowledge of Antique books- out of print material, first editions, value that one could expect to pay, and knowledge about authors.
Don was a member of the Fellowship Lodge No. 681 F. & A. M. in Anderson.
Don was an animal lover, especially our pet companions "Tux" and Tigger"
Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth (Jones) Walker of Anderson; brother-in-law, Fred Jones; several nieces and nephews including, Malynna (James) Silverthorn, Carolyn (Bob) Melson, Gerry Jones and David Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Wanda Walker and Melba (Charles) Mahoney; brother, Sgt. Lowell Keith Walker.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastor Mike Whiteman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
