Francis J. McNary
10/18/2018

Francis J. McNary, 85, died peacefully at his home in Wayland, Massachusetts, on October 18, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Mary Margaret (Cleary) McNary and their children Mary Elizabeth McNary-Hickey, Justin McNary; Julie McNary; Sarah McNary, and Martin McNary. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Aidan McNary-Hickey and Aisling McNary-Hickey, by two sisters, Ellen Foley and Judy Havran, by a brother, Thomas McNary, and by numerous nieces and nephews. One of Francis’s last wishes was that his long-time friends Roger Williams, Hugh Shine, Jack Boyajian, Joe Keefe, and Bobby Ewanouski and his son-in-law Patrick Hickey act as honorary pallbearers.
Francis was born on April 16, 1933 in Hartford, Connecticut, to Francis M. McNary and Lillian (Collins) McNary. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and his Masters Degree in English Literature from Wesleyan University. Shortly after the Korean War ended, he deployed to Korea where he served a stint as a private first class in the United States Army. Always a great story teller, Francis had some very amusing tales to tell about his time in Korea.
Francis began what was to be a lifetime career in educational publishing as a salesman of college textbooks for the old Boston firm of Ginn and Company. By the time he retired, he was president of Simon and Shuster’s International Division of Educational Text Book Publications. While working in that division, he traveled not only all over North and South America, but in Europe as well. With his marvelous sense of humor, he made lasting friendships wherever he went, and he will be sorely missed by scores of people in many parts of the globe.
Visitations will be on Friday, October 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte. 30), Wayland.
His Mass of Catholic Burial will be held on Saturday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann Church of the Good Shepherd Parish, 124 Cochituate Road, Wayland.
To honor Francis’ wishes, interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date.
