Barry Schaefer

Barry Schaefer, Peckville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. His wife is the former Carol Edwards. They recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Elmer and Josephine Davis Schaefer, Barry grew up on Adams Avenue in Scranton. He was a member of the Scranton Boys Club, where he started boxing and won Golden Gloves. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17, where he continued boxing and was Marine Corps champion with a record of 33-0. After serving, he returned home, where he worked with his father, Elmer, in the family roofing business. For 21 years, he ran "Barry and Carol's Sausage and Peppers" stand at the Italian Festival. He was the former vice-president of the 20th Ward Social Club, where he enjoyed cooking for many social events. After his retirement, Barry worked in the maintenance department at the JCC of Scranton. Barry was the ultimate handyman; he never encountered a car, motor or appliance he couldn't fix.

Most of all, Barry loved spending time with his family and friends. He had many fond memories of family camping trips, his hunting club and coffee with the guys.

Also surviving are daughters, Lisa Conaboy and husband, John; Karen Pollack and husband, Robert; son, Brian Schaefer and wife, Megan; grandchildren, Sean Hetsko and wife, Kimberly; Rachel Pollack, Joshua and Zachary Conaboy, Alexander, Molly, Emma and Benjamin Schaefer; sisters, Avellina Cimino, Jeannie Tielli and husband, Nick; Barbara Romanchick and husband, Robert; and Ronnie Piccolino.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Barry Schaefer Jr.

A celebration of Barry's life will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home Inc., 129 Grant St., Olyphant.

Friends may call 9:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will be private in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
