Obituary

On June 20, 2018 William Thomas Fitzgibbons, Sr. passed away at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson, MD. Mr. Fitzgibbons was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 24, 1925 to the late Thomas and Margaret Fitzgibbons (nee Betkey). He grew up in Hamilton and graduated from City College in 1943. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as a radar/radio operator on the USS ATR-21 until the end of WWII. He received the American Theatre Service Medal and WWII Victory Medal for his service.

In 1947 he married Phyllis Bettien and they settled in the Baynesville area of Baltimore County. Bill began working as a salesman selling roofing and siding products and later opened his own business, Fitzgibbons Enterprises, Inc., after moving to Riderwood. Bill was active in the Kiwanis, owned several thoroughbred race horses, and enjoyed boating, golfing, and coaching football and baseball. In the 1990’s he served on the Maryland Racing Commission as well as the Maryland Horseman’s Association and was honored by them in 1994 for his outstanding service to Maryland Horseman. He was always involved in his church, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Towson, as well as the Baltimore Lutheran School.

In 2000 Bill and his wife, Phyllis, moved to Cockeysville where he remained until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years in 2006, and is survived by 3 children and 6 grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, June 23rd, at 11 A.M. in Parkwood Cemetery, Taylor Avenue.
