WAYLAND: Robert Theodore Barnes, died on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Emerson Hospital following a brief period of declining health.
He was born in Syracuse, New York on May 2, 1922 the son of the late Clarence T. Barnes and Doris (Barnes) Barnes.
Robert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley M. (Armstrong) Barnes of Wayland. Father of Russell L. Barnes of Lyme, NH and David A. Barnes of Denver, CO. Also survived by his granddaughter Kendall E. Jacobs and her husband Nate Jacobs and their son Arthur Jacobs all of Arvada, CO. Brother of Alan Barnes of Camillus, NY.
He has been a resident of Wayland for over 56 years and spent his formative years in Syracuse, NY. Robert received his BS in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and had a long and progressive career as a Propulsion Engineer. He served his country as a Sergeant with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. His career included working at Pratt and Whitney, General Electric, Curtis Wright, Bell Aircraft, RCA, AVCO and Raytheon. In his earlier years, he had a great passion for skiing and received his Eagle Scout.
After a forced "early retirement" Robert applied himself to investing, with his engineering mind and discipline he did quite well. His investment strategy was to stay 100% in equities at the cutting edge of science and engineering. He was a stubborn optimist always looking to and believing in the future. Up until his death, read the Wall Street Journal every day.
Robert lived modestly, mowing the lawn and clearing the snow from the driveway until he was no longer physically able. He reveled in snow, after all he was from Syracuse NY. He believed in and practiced philanthropy giving substantial sums to many charities.
The Boy Scouts was an important part of his life. He lived his life according to the Scout Oath. He was proud to be a Boy Scout.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Robert’s memory may be sent to Boy Scouts of America or your local Scouting organization
At the request of his family, private family services and interment in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Syracuse, NY will be held at a later date.
