Alfred A. "Buddy" Barnard, Jr.

SPRINGFIELD - Alfred A. "Buddy" Barnard, Jr., 81, of the Sixteen Acres section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on December 8, 1936, a beloved son of the late Alfred A. and Ruth L. (Shackley) Barnard. He was raised in Springfield and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was employed as a groundskeeper and mechanic for the Springfield Diocesan Cemeteries, working at Saint Michael Cemetery and retired in 2001. Previously, he had worked as a mechanic for Balise Chevrolet in Springfield and later at the Liberty Shell Gas and Service Stations on Carew Street and Orange Street, both in Springfield. He had also worked at Pratt and Whitney in Windsor Locks, CT. He leaves his beloved wife, Marcia A. (Mazzeo) Barnard. They were married July 15, 1961 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 56 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, Peter A. Barnard and his partner, Jennifer, and Rose-Marie and Steven Thomas; his five cherished grandchildren, Jordan, Hannah and Joe Barnard and Kyle and Jessica Thomas; his dear sister-in-law, Marie Renaud; his two dear nieces, Cheryl L'Heureux and her husband, Roy, and Debbie Clark and her husband, Butch; and his many dear friends. In addition to his beloved parents, he was also predeceased by his two dear sisters, Beverly Sullivan and her husband, Maurice, and Virginia Keating and her husband, Robert; his dear brother-in-law, Alberic Renaud; and his dear niece, Maureen Pafumi. His family would like to thank the staff at Wingate at Springfield for their care and compassion over the past several months. His Funeral will be held on Monday morning, January 8, 2018 beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel, 254 State Street, Springfield, MA 01103. His Burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made in his memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
