North Andover, Mass. – Mrs. Caroline H. Buckler, 79, of North Andover, Mass., formerly of Gloucester, MA, died peacefully on December 27, 2017 surrounded by family. Caroline, more commonly called Carol, was born on December 23, 1938, in Boston, MA., to Stephen B. and Harriet (White) Hibbard. She was the older of 2 children. Most of Carol’s childhood was spent in Pittsfield, MA, until she left to attend Madeira School in Washington, D.C., from which she graduated in 1956. She then went on to obtain a BA in Greek Art from Smith College in 1960.
Carol had 2 daughters with her first husband, James N. Edwards of Swampscott, MA. In 1975, she remarried Dr. John Buckler, a professor of ancient Greek history at the University of Illinois, Urbana and with him had a very satisfying and productive career in the academic field of ancient Greek theater and history. She published several important articles in this area. She was an excellent artist and photographer and contributed professional-grade photographs and drawings for her colleagues’ publications as well as for exhibitions at the Classics Museum at the University of Illinois.
Outside of her scholarship, Carol loved reading, writing poetry, classical music, hiking and traveling. She was a life-long learner, learning to speak Greek in her 30s and fluent German in her 40s. On top of that she was an excellent cook, seamstress and was very gifted in needlework, painting and even carpentry.
She is survived and will be sadly missed by her 2 daughters, Elizabeth K. Edwards of Potomac, IL and Caroline P. Edwards of San Carlos, CA, her 2 granddaughters, Caroline and Nicole Hwang and her brother, Stephen T. Hibbard of Weston MA. A Celebration of Carol’s life for family and friends is being planned for May 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
