CHICOPEE – Doris Y. “Red” (Leonard) Bernier, 87, a longtime resident of Dallaire Avenue in Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, December 15, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at Holyoke Healthcare Center in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Saint John’s, Province of Newfoundland, Canada on April 5, 1930, a beloved daughter of the late Ernest Leonard, Sr. and Rose (Martin) Leonard. She was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee schools and was a longtime resident of Chicopee before moving to Worthington to live with her loving son, Kenneth, for the past five years. She was employed as a nurse aide at Willimansett Center West and later worked as a manager of the Columba Court Apartments, both in Chicopee. An extraordinary cook, she shared many wonderful meals with her family and friends. Above all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who showered her family with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. In addition to her loving parents, she was also predeceased by her beloved son, David M. Bernier; her beloved infant daughter, Mary Bernier; and her three dear brothers and six dear sisters. She leaves her four loving children, Laurie R. Mahar of South Hadley, Michael A. Bernier and his companion, Sandy, Carol M. Bernier, and Kenneth A. Bernier of Worthington; her four cherished grandchildren, Frederick, Melanie, Holly and Jessica; her three dear sisters, Cozette Turgeon, Carol Dryzgula and Evelyn Blanchard; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Her Funeral Services and Burial will be private at the convenience of her family. There are no visiting hours.
