Mary M. (Penta) Scali

Mary M. (Penta) Scali, of Biddeford, Maine, and formerly of Medford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, November 7th at the Winchester Hospital. She was 87.

Born in Boston’s North End, she was raised in Medford, and was the daughter of the late Raymond and Melina (Maffeo) Penta. Mary was a Medford High School graduate with the Class of 1948 and continued her education at the Katherine Gibbs School, graduating from the secretarial program with the Class of 1950. She and her husband James were later married at St. Clement Church in Medford, on June 7, 1953. Together they built their family with love and devotion.

Mary was dedicated to her community. She worked as a Traffic Supervisor with the former Metropolitan District Commission for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed puzzles, crochet, cooking, baking and shopping. She loved family outings and traveling around the world with her sister, Camille.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late James P. Scali, who passed away in 1978. She was the devoted mother of Cherly Alonardo and her late husband Richard of Stoneham, Frances M. Connolly and her husband Paul of Biddeford, Maine, Linda Lee Scali of Burlington, and James P. Scali Jr. of Salisbury. She was the loving grandmother of Richie Alonardo of Stoneham, Jimmy Alonardo of South Boston, Paul Connolly of Stoneham, Kate Connolly of South Boston, Kristen Katsimpas and her husband Gabe of South Boston, Aurora Connolly of Biddeford, Maine, Sophie and James Scali of Newburyport. Mary was the dear sister of Phyllis Tortorella and her late husband Frank of Stoneham, Gloria Sussman and her husband Sy of Ventnor City, New Jersey, and Pat Penta and his wife Denise of Ipswich. She was preceded in death by her sister Camille Lowney and her husband Brendan. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford, on Saturday, November 11th at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Clement Church, 71 Warner Street, Medford at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 through 8 PM. Services will conclude with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
