Leroy W. “Roy” Cooney, age 79, a lifelong resident of Foxboro, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the beloved husband of Gail A. (Remington) Cooney, to whom he was wed for the past fifty-seven years.
Born in Attleboro, MA on April 19, 1938, he was a loving son of the late Russell O. and Margaret (Uhrig) Cooney.
Roy grew up in Foxboro, was educated in Foxboro Public Schools and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserve.
Mr. Cooney was a self-employed barber and the proud owner of Roy’s Barber Shop, which operated at his home on South St. in Foxboro. He had also worked the nightshift as a security officer at both Foxboro Stadium and at Norwood Hospital as well.
When not spending time with his adoring family, Roy’s passion was flying airplanes, gliders and drones. He was a former member of the Heli Club in Mansfield, and also enjoyed playing golf and was an avid football fan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children Laurie A. O’Han and her husband Michael of Holbrook, Brenda L. McGlynn and her husband Daniel of Franklin, Todd L. Cooney of Franklin, and Dana A. Cooney and his wife Kathleen of Mansfield. He was the cherished grandfather of Charlene and Michael O’Han, Kayleigh and Joseph McGlynn, and Caroline, Colleen, Cathryn, Adam and Ryan Cooney, and is also survived by 2 great grandchildren.
A private funeral service will be held at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield followed by burial with military honors at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.
Visiting hours are omitted and those wishing may remember Roy with a donation in his memory made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215.
