Valerie Jeanne Muir
Age 87, of North St. Paul.
Loving wife, mother, educator, and musician.
Passed away peacefully in her home on October 29, 2017. Valerie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edgar H. White, and her darling granddaughter, Kari Lynn Thorsen. Valerie was born in Jackson, MN, to Kenneth and Helen Muir, graduated from Jackson High School in 1948, attended Macalester College from 1948-50, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1954. She taught first grade with deep love and dedication in the St. Paul Public Schools until her retirement in 1986. A gifted vocalist and musician, she served as church organist and choir director at North St. Paul Presbyterian Church and White Bear Lake United Methodist Church. Valerie was an active member of the AAUW St. Paul Branch for over sixty years. Her many hobbies included Bridge, gardening, collecting antiques, and painting. She was passionate about her Scottish heritage and Macalester College where she was a “Golden Scot”. Valerie is survived by her four children upon whom she bestowed ardent and unwavering love: Christopher Thorsen of North St. Paul, Jennifer Gobel of West St. Paul, Carlynn Trout and Dean White, both of Columbia, MO. She was a loving mother-in-law to Nancy Thorsen, Mark Gobel, and Dennis Trout. She cherished her seven grandchildren Kyle, Scott and Kari Thorsen, Laura Gobel Skemp and Rebecca Gobel Menssen, Cora and Jacob Trout. Visitation Monday, November 6 from 4 to 7 PM at Sandberg Funeral Home, 2593 E. 7th Ave., North St. Paul. Funeral service 11 AM on Tuesday, November 7 at The House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Avenue, St. Paul. Private interment Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Memorials to the Macalester College Pipe Band.
