Mary Horne
7/31/2017

WESTON: Mary Horne, “The Bluebird Lady of Weston,” passed away peacefully in her home on July 31, 2017 surrounded by loving family and friends.
She was born on August 29, 1926 in Belmont, MA, educated at Pomona College and later in Switzerland.
Mary spent her professional career in the field of education. She first taught at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, then in the Newton public school system and completed her career as a guidance counselor in Sherborn, MA. Highly civic minded, Mary also served on the Weston School Committee, the Board of Friends of The Library and rarely missed a Town Meeting.
Mary’s love of education was eclipsed, however, by her passion for wildlife conservation, adventure travel, backpacking, canoeing, tennis, antique cars, the Audubon Society, wild turkeys and bluebirds. She traversed the globe to witness polar bears in the Arctic, endangered gorillas in Rwanda and bird life in Patagonia. In 2007, after having placed and monitored close to 50 bluebird houses throughout Weston, Mary was described as “part and parcel of the environmental movement,” and recognized for “single-handedly” bringing bluebirds back to the Town.
Mary will long be remembered as a faithful friend and loving godmother; a caring woman who gave prolifically and worked tirelessly to create a better, more sustainable world.
In addition to her beloved friends and dedicated caregivers, Mary is survived by her two goddaughters, Melanie Goodpasture and Sue Carlson, and three nieces, Freya Horne, Lisa Lucero and Valerie Wells.
A private family interment was held at Linwood Cemetery. May Mary eternally rest in peace and beauty.
