Bernard S. O’Malley, 86

Bernard S. O’Malley, age 86, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, July 13, 2017. He was the beloved husband of the late Alicia “Lee” (Mellon) O’Malley, to whom he was wed for fifty-five years at the time of her death on June 3, 2008.

Born in Attleboro, MA on January 22, 1931, he was a loving son of the late Charles E. and Regina F. (Sheldon) O’Malley.

Bernie grew up and was educated in Mansfield. He was a graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School in Taunton and a member of the first graduating class at Stonehill College in Easton.

During the Korean War, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged from duty on October 3, 1957 with the rank of Lieutenant First Class.

A proud father, grandfather and great grandfather, Mr. O’Malley was a well-respected businessman and the retired owner of O’Malley Real Estate, a company he founded in Mansfield, in 1974.

Bernie was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield, where throughout the years had served in various capacities, including being a former Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Scout Master for Troop 14.

Active in town affairs, Mr. O’Malley was a former member of the Mansfield School Committee, the Mansfield Finance Committee, and the Mansfield Historical Commission, served as a town constable and most recently as a member of the Fales Fuel Advisory Committee.

He is survived by his devoted children Patrick J. O’Malley and his wife Tammy of Foxboro, Edward W. O’Malley and his wife Caroline of Mansfield, Kathleen O. Stearns and her husband Stephen of Maine, James Michael O’Malley of Illinois, Ellen O. VanHaaren and her husband Christopher of Rhode Island, Theresa O. Nevers and her husband John of Mansfield, Alicia O. Yaghoobian and her husband Scott of Mansfield, and the late Mary O. Jackson and her late husband Robert. He was the brother of Richard O’Malley and his wife Patricia of Mansfield, and the late Charles O’Malley and Edward O’Malley. He is also survived by his adoring 20 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and his loving companion for the past eight years, Louise Stupack of Mansfield, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends of Bill W.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Monday, July 17th at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 16th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
