Joseph Patrick O'Shea
5/22/2017

WAYLAND: Joseph Patrick O’Shea, our beloved father, journeyed home to his eternal rest on May 22, 2017 surrounded by all who loved him, and there were many.
He was born in Boston on November 21, 1928 the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Bierher) O’Shea.
“Papa Joe”, as he was affectionately known, was a truly wonderful man. His family was his pride and joy and he never missed an opportunity to let them know it.
He was raised in Concord, New Hampshire by his parents Catherine and Michael O’Shea. At the young age of twelve, Joe’s father passed away. As a result, he and his mother faced many financial challenges. It was during these years that his entrepreneur spirit was born and would remain central to his career and identity.
Upon graduation from Saint John’s High School in Concord, NH, Joe went on to attend Boston College where he was the Class Treasurer. After graduation he served as a Lieutenant in the Korean War. Upon completion of his service, Joe began his life long career as a traveling independent shoe representative, a job that he loved and was extremely successful at. When asked why he chose shoes to sell, he simply replied “because everyone needs them!”
The happiest years of Joe’s life began on October 3, 1959 when he wed Alice Mary Carney and they would have four children and reside in Wayland for the next 50 years. Joe was pre-deceased by Alice in December 2014 after 55 years of marriage.
He is survived by his four children; Margaret Lien and her husband Jon of Northborough; Timothy O’Shea and his wife Elizabeth of Newport, R.I.; Thomas O’Shea and his wife Amy of Nashua, NH and Maureen Heavey and her husband Michael of Mansfield. He also leaved behind the joys of his life – 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives.
Visitations will be held on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte. 30), Wayland.
His Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Parish at St. Ann’s Church, 124 Cochituate Rd (Rte. 27), Wayland.
Interment will follow in the O’Shea family lot in North Cemetery in Wayland.
