John P. Wellington, Sr., 89

John P. Wellington, Sr., age 89, of Port Charlotte, Florida and North Falmouth, formerly of Mansfield passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. He was the beloved husband of the late Lois T. (Wight) Wellington who died on January 3, 2009.

Born in Medford, MA on November 23, 1927, he was a loving son of the late Ruth (Upham) Wellington.

John grew up, and was educated in Medford and was a graduate of Medford High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy at the conclusion of WWII. He returned to school, graduating from UMASS Amherst with a bachelor’s degree and then served his country once again, as a member of the United States Army at the beginning of the Korean War.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Wellington was employed for many years as a civil engineer at the HNTB Engineering Co. in Boston. He had made his home in Florida for the past twenty-eight years where he was an active member and served on the Board of Directors at the Oak Hollow Community in Port Charlotte.

While residing in Mansfield, John attended the Mansfield Congregational Church and served as a former member on the Mansfield Planning Board. He loved spending time with his family and summers spent in North Falmouth. He also lived for a period of time in Maine and remained a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Houlton. Mr. Wellington was also an avid reader and enjoyed collecting stamps.


He is survived by his devoted children Charlotte A. Wellington-Kilduff and her husband Kevin of Glendale, AZ, Dana R. Wellington and his wife Kathy of Russell, PA, Nancy J. Ghiloni and her husband Fred of Attleboro, John P. Wellington, Jr. and his wife Julie of Providence, RI, Judy R. Wellington and her wife Lee of Oakdale, TN, Gary C. Wellington and his wife Stephanie of Attleboro and David S. wellington and his husband Joshua of Pawtucket, RI. He was the cherished grandfather of Alex M. Wellington, Andrew G. Wellington, Daniel L. Rickett, Jonathan P. Wellington, and the adoring uncle of Karen McFarland and Michael Wight.


His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday, May 15th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 14th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
