Obituary

Janice Elaine Killcollum Madura, 71, of Mystic, Connecticut passed away Monday April 10th at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Janice was born in Norwich, Connecticut on July 20, 1945 and was predeceased by her parents John and Felicita (DeCloux) Killcollum, and her older sister Ann F. Lewerk.

Janice is survived by her three children and their families; Kristin Madura Hamilton and her husband Murray, son Cameron and daughter Jessica, Andrew Madura and his wife Angela, and daughters Madison and Lauren; all of Phoenix, AZ and her son Michael Madura, his wife Angela and son Finnegan of Golden, CO. Also surviving Janice are her brother-in-law Calvin Lewerk and nieces; Debbie Felty, Susan Ross, and Marianne Vaiciulis. Family was extremely important to her and she felt blessed to have such family support over the years.

After graduating Putnam Catholic Academy Janice attended the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital School of Nursing graduating with her Registered Nurse Diploma. Nursing remained her profession for her entire life. Retiring from the State of Connecticut, Janice was well known for her “therapeutic touch” work with people who were ill; she believed you could convey so much more with touch than with the spoken word. Another foundational aspect of Jan’s life was her 31 years of dedicated service as a Friend of Bill W. If you asked Janice what was her message to the world and the people she loved; she’d have said, “I tried”. In fact, she not only tried but she succeeded. She helped many people in their journeys thru life, through nursing, her service to others and her gentle and caring touch - she will not be forgotten. Janice's caring ways will be dearly missed.

Janice will be honored at a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 18th at 10:30am at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Catholic Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road Groton, CT 06340. Per Jan’s wishes, a private burial with the family will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, (www.lls.org), or The American Brain Tumor Association (www.abta.org)
