James A. Moore, 78

James A. Moore, age 78, of Norton, formerly of Mansfield, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 11, 2017, surrounded by his adoring family. He was the beloved husband of June (Collings) Moore, to whom he was wed for forty-eight years.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 16, 1938, he was a loving son of the late Arthur M. and Mary M. (Phillips) Moore.

Jim grew up in Arlington and was a 1956 graduate of Arlington High School. He furthered his studies, graduating from Tufts University in 1960 with degrees in music and math.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Moore had worked for fifteen years as a software engineer at Motorola in Mansfield. He was also a professional musician playing the piano and organ, and was professionally trained in classical music by Leo Litwin.

Along with his family, Jim was a member of the Mansfield Congregational Church. He played the organ and piano, and served as a choir director at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Taunton and at All Saints Episcopal Church in Attleboro.

Mr. Moore had made his home in Norton for the past twenty years and previously resided in Mansfield. He was an active member and former treasurer of the American Guild of Organists. He loved music, math and also watching TV sports.

In Jim’s own words, “was born of peasant stock and had a broad, if not deep knowledge of many subjects.”

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted sons Matthew J. Moore and his wife Sabrina of Marlborough and Benjamin W. Moore and his companion Haley Cahill-Williams of Pawtucket, RI. He was the cherished grandfather of Adam and Stella Moore of Marlborough. He was the dear brother of the late William H. Moore and is predeceased by his close cousins Anna-Louise, Norman H. and Mary C. MacNeil. He was the brother-in-law of William Collings of Frederick, Maryland and is also survived by his nephews Stuart and Jeffrey Moore and Charles Collings.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a service in celebration of his life on Saturday, March 25th at 11:00 A.M. in the Mansfield Congregational Church, 17 West St., Mansfield. Burial will be held privately at a later date at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 24th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
