Richard C. Phillips, Sr., 80

Richard C. Phillips, Sr., age 80, of Norton, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, October 6, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Josephine A. (Piveronas) Phillips, to whom he was wed on October 12, 1958.

Born in Brockton, MA on June 14, 1936, he was a loving son of the late Clarence E. and Olive I. (Westerlund) Phillips.

Dick grew up and was educated in Brockton. During the Korean War, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged from duty on June 6, 1957 with the rank of Seaman.

Mr. Phillips was a retired skilled bricklayer having worked for the Bricklayers Union. He had made his home in Norton for over 50 years and attended St. Mary’s Church in Norton.

Dick’s veteran’s affiliations included being a member of the Norton VFW Post 8049, a life member of the DAV Chapter 56 in North Attleboro and attending USS Neches naval reunions

Mr. Phillips also enjoyed gardening, engaging in projects around the house, grilling for family cookouts, photography, and the simple pleasure of sitting in his lawn chair watching the kids and grand kids playing in the pool, which brought him much joy. He was affectionately known by many as the “Honey Bee Man”, and when younger, Dick was involved in gymnastics and boxing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted sons Michael F. Phillips and his wife Barbara of Florida, Scott J. Phillips and his wife Leah of South Attleboro, Karl E. Phillips and his wife Karen of Taunton and the late Richard C. Phillips, Jr. He was the brother of Ann Quieto and her husband Angelo of Florida, the brother in law of Frank Piveronas and his wife Barbara of Maine, and is also survived by his cherished 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 12th at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power St., Norton. Burial with military honors will follow at the Timothy Plain Cemetery in Norton.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, October 11th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.

In lieu of flowers, Richard’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
