John G. Baynes, 71

John G. “Jack” Baynes, age 71, of Mansfield, MA passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA. He was the beloved husband of Connie Trask Baynes, to whom he wed on April 9, 1966.

Born in Blossburg, PA on December 2, 1944, he was the loving son of the late John H. and Audrey (Griffiths) Baynes.

Jack grew up in Mansfield, PA and received his undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg State College in 1966. After serving two years in the Peace Corp in El Salvador, with his wife Connie, he returned to teach physical education in his hometown of Mansfield, PA where he also volunteered as an Athletic Trainer. Jack then earned his Master’s Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Arizona in 1970 and accepted an assistant Athletic Training position at Northeastern University in Boston, MA where he assumed the Head Athletic Trainer position in 1972 and served the students and faculty for 24 years before returning to Tucson, Arizona. In 1995, Jack became the first full time athletic trainer at Santa Rita High School working for the next 15 years before retiring in 2006.
Jack was heavily involved in all aspects of his profession and his years of service to athletes and students of athletic training were recognized by many honors, most notably being inducted into the Northeastern University Hall of Fame in 1995, the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts Hall of Fame in 2005.

Jack had made his home in Mansfield, MA for the past four years having previously resided in Tucson, AZ. He was a member of the American Baptist Church and will always be remembered for his incredibly strong work ethic, his humility and love of laughter, his dedication to friends and family and for doling out his unique divine ministry of athletic training and life!

He is survived by his beloved wife Connie, his devoted daughter Sharon Baynes Murphy and son-in-law Joseph Murphy of Mansfield, MA and his son Alan P Baynes. He was the dear brother of Margaret “Bonnie” Sekella and her husband Gary of CA, and Kathryn Machinski and her husband Robert of Florida. He was the cherished grandfather of Audrey E. Murphy and Sean W. Murphy both of Mansfield, MA, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Private burial will take place at the Prospect Cemetery in Mansfield, PA on October 1 and a Celebration of Life event will be held on October 16th from 1-5 at The Chieftain on Rt. 1 in Plainville, MA where friends and family can gather to share stories and raise a glass to the wonderful man we all knew and loved.
