Richard W. Smith, 69
Dateline: Norton, MA

Richard W. Smith, age 69, of Norton, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2016, at “Wingate at Norton” after battling two types of cancer. He was the beloved husband of Donna M. (Lopes) Smith, to whom he was wed on November 19, 1994.

Born in Sewickley, PA, on December 25, 1946, he was the loving son of the late Wayne and Helen (Hooper) Smith.

Rich grew up and was educated in East Haven, CT. During the Vietnam War, Richard proudly served his country for four years as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged from duty on December 19, 1969, with the rank of Sergeant and had received many awards. Mr. Smith then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree from Northeastern University, followed by an MBA from Bentley College.

A resident of Norton for over twenty years, Rich had worked in the high tech industry at Siemens Nixdorf Information Systems, Inc., in Burlington, as a CS Marketing Manager. Later, he was employed as a Senior Director at Physician Computer Network, Inc., in Needham, and then ran his own health/life insurance business until semi-retiring with the beginning of some health issues.

Mr. Smith was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Norton and served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 61 of Norton. He had also been a member of BNI (Business Networking International). Rich was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fresh water bass fishing. Being an all-around Boston Sports fan, he was involved in sports himself; in particular, was a successful golfer in business and club tournaments. Running, racquetball, and bicycling were also sports Richard participated in.

Before children, some of his favorite pastimes with Donna included traveling and exploring, hiking, downhill/cross country skiing, dancing, beach vacations, candlelit dinners, walks, and lots of laughs together. After having children, sharing the childrearing years became the main focus for Rich and Donna, all while still maintaining a close, loving relationship.

In addition to his beloved wife, Donna: Richard is survived by their two devoted children, Christopher Richard Smith and Holly Ann Smith, both of Norton. He is also survived by children Ryan J. Smith and his wife Leanne of Uxbridge and Michelle M. (Smith) Panaccione and her husband Matthew of Pepperell. He is the dear brother of Carolyn (Smith) Lombardo and her husband Kenneth, of Guilford, CT; Nancy (Smith) Cafferty and her late husband, Jack, as well as Michael Smith and his wife Christine, all of Clinton, CT. Mr. Smith is also survived by five delightful grandchildren; Hannah, Nathan, Meghan, Ava and Eliot, as well as several nieces and nephews.

On Monday morning, September 26, all are cordially invited to a visitation from 9:00-10:30 A.M., at Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Rte. 140, Taunton Ave.), Norton. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 A.M., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, One Power Street, Norton. Interment will be private with military honors.
