Obituary

Mary J. (Martin) Lima, 96, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2016 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. She was the wife of the late John "Louie" Lima.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel D. and Maria (Theodore) Martin, she lived in New Bedford all of her life. She was formerly employed by the Gosnold Mill, Acushnet Company and Ell-Vee-Dee, Inc.

Mary was a life-long, avid Red Sox fan, and enjoyed traveling, playing Bingo, singing and being with her family. She loved to crochet and do many crafts. She is admired for her strength in bringing up her family, and will be greatly missed.

Mary was a member of many clubs, including the Acushnet VFW, the Mount Carmel Seniors, the Goodyear Seniors, the Hazelwood Seniors, the St. Mary's Seniors in Fairhaven, the Bliss Corner Club, and the Dartmouth Seniors, where she enjoyed the company of all of her friends.

Survivors include a son, Michael Ferreira and his wife Norma of Dartmouth; two daughters, Dorothy Foster and Geraldine Souza, both of New Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Ferreira of Chelan, Washington; a sister, Mary J. Cordeiro of New Bedford; 9 grandchildren, Barbara Aguiar and her husband Douglas, Edward Foster, and Leanne Ferreira, all of Dartmouth, Cheryl Furtado , Brian Ferreira, Scott Ferreira and Ronald Souza and his wife Pattie, all of New Bedford, Christine Xifaras and her husband Bill of Acushnet, and Robert Souza of Fairhaven; 11 great-grandchildren, Bethany Pelletier, Michael Furtado, Stephanie Crossman, Tommy Foster, Mason Linhares, Michael Xifaras, Angela Xifaras, Becky Andrade, Kristen Souza, Alijah Ferreira and Cal Rego; 6 great-great-grandchildren, Makayla Furtado, Amy Marie Linhares, Alia Souza, Georgie Souza, Hailey Souza and Nathan Souza; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late John Ferreira, Jr., grandmother of the late Raymond Souza, mother-in-law of the late Robert Souza and Edward Foster, and sister of the late Manuel Martin, Almarinda Martin, Rose Martin, and Mary Tavares.

Her Funeral will be held on Monday, August 29th at 9:30 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday, August 28th from 3-7 PM.
