Ellen G. (Murphy) McCarthy, a former longtime resident of Stoughton, passed away peacefully, in the presence of her loving family on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Southeast Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center in Easton.

She was the beloved wife of the late Charles G. McCarthy, Jr., to whom she was wed for over fifty years at the time of his death in 2003.

Born in Boston, MA, she was a loving daughter of the late John and Gertrude (Baker) Murphy. She grew up in Milton and was a graduate of Milton High School. She was also a graduate of the Kathleen Dell’s School Medical Secretarial Program.

After raising her family, Mrs. McCarthy began a career with the Social Security Administration in Brockton. After many years of faithful service, she retired with the position as a Claims Administrator.

Ellen’s hobbies included knitting, reading, ceramics, traveling and swimming. Most of all, she treasured the times spent with her adoring family, especially the yearly vacations spent in beautiful Narragansett, Rhode Island.

She is survived by her devoted children Karen A. Munkley of Quincy, Brian M. McCarthy and his wife Deborah of Mansfield, Jean E. Walsh and her husband James of Andover, Nancy M. Nelson and her husband Henry of Scituate, Patricia A. Dorney and her husband Richard of Norton and Ellen M. Lynch and her husband John of Mansfield. She was the dear sister of the late John H. Murphy. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Couture of Weymouth, as well as her cherished 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandsons, many loving nieces and nephews, and several cousins.

Her funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Thursday, July 21st at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at the Milton Cemetery in Milton.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 20th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.

In lieu of flowers, Ellen’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 60 Walnut St., Unit 102, Wellesley, MA 02481 or the Old Colony Hospice, 1 Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
