Obituary

In Port Charlotte, FL., Lucile (Gasaway) Riva, of Buzzards Bay, MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at the Douglas Jacobson Veterans Nursing Home in Port Charlotte, FL. On May 27, 2016 She was the youngest child of the late Carrie (Peyton) Gasaway and Oscar Lee Gasaway of Leroy, ILL. For 69 years she was the beloved wife of Hugo J. Riva, devoted mother of Carrie R. Green and her husband Raymond of Seekonk, Ma and Donna L. Riva of Ratondo West, FL. Devoted grandmother of Todd A. Green and his wife Erica V. Green of Rehoboth and Samuel J. Green and his wife Jenny of Swansea. Lucile was the proud great grandmother of Mitchell A. Green and Makenzie R. Green. She was the sister of the late Lyle and Lester Gasaway, Paulene Griffith and Allen Gasaway. She was the daughter in law of the late Maria and Rosa Riva. Lucile was also the sister in law to Roma F. Riva and the late Lillian Alegi Riva and the late Norma Riva Murphy and John A. Murphy. She also leaves several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Lucile was educated in Leroy, Ill. During WWII she enlisted into the U.S. Navy WAVES where she served as chaplain assistant to a Protestant minister, a Catholic priest and a Jewish Rabbi. She married her husband Hugo Riva at St. Joseph’s Church in Taunton, MA on August 10, 1946. Shortly thereafter the “Riva extended family” opened the Gondola Restaurant where Lucile was the very first waitress to serve a customer. Lucile was very involved with the Brownie & Girl Scouts when her two daughters were in elementary school. Lucile’s fondest pass times included: traveling, reading, sewing and she loved animals. Her parish church in Taunton, Immaculate Conception, relied on her to keep the churches altar linens and vestments in tip top shape, taking advantage of her being an exceptional seamstress. She was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Women’s Guild and the Morton Hospital Auxiliary. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Monday, July 18th from 5-7pm. at the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St. Taunton, Ma 02780 A service will be held on Tuesday, July 19th at 1pm. at Bourne National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
